Over the past year regulated e-cigarette “box mods” have become all the
rage in the vaping industry. Their square shape appeals to many vapers and they’re often loaded with power and advanced features. They often include high capacity batteries as well, meaning they can run for long periods of time before needing a recharge. Let us share our top picks!
Although it wasn’t the first, it’s safe to say that the iTaste MVP by Innokin started the box mod trend just a few years ago. It gained mass appeal because of it’s wide range of features, long-lasting battery and reasonable price. Followed up by the iTaste MVP 2.0, a growing list of companies jumped on the box mod bandwagon. These days box mods are loaded with power and advanced technology. Here are some of the best choices, starting with the best box mods for beginners, followed by the high-powered vape mods taking the industry by storm.
Top 3 Box Mods – Beginner (20-30W)
Vapers looking to move beyond a basic cigalike or eGo-style vape pen often prefer to start with something simple, compact and affordable. These are the best box mods for average, everyday vapers who want something moderately powerful and reasonably priced; without being overly complex or complicated:
The iStick 30W is almost exactly like the original iStick, with a few major differences. It has the same easy-to-use interface, long-lasting 2200mAh battery and ultra-compact design, but it provides up to 30W of power instead of 20W. It’s also compatible with atomizers as low as 0.4 ohms, meaning you can use it with most sub-ohm tanks, including the Aspire Atlantis, Subtank Mini, etc. To allow 22mm tanks to sit flush, it also has an enlarged top lip.
Just like it’s predecessor, the iTaste MVP 2.0, the new-and-improved iTaste MVP 20W is long-lasting, affordable and extremely versatile. Identical in almost every aspect to the MVP 2.0, the main difference with the MVP 20W is that it provides up to 20W of power instead of just ten. It has a huge 2600mAh battery that will last most vapers for days, includes an easy-to-use interface and tons of unique user-friendly features. An affordable device ideal for just about anyone, especially beginners ready for their first regulated box mod.
The Joyetech eGrip is a unique and compact box mod that not only includes a 1500mAh battery, but also includes a built-in tank. No need to worry about choosing an atomizer, a large 3.6ml glass tank it nestled right inside the device. It even has adjustable airflow! Replaceable heads are available and the only visible extension from the top is the removable drip tip. Simple and straight forward, this baby can pump out up to 20W of power and is perfect for beginners or anyone looking for something compact and easy to use.
Top 3 Box Mods – Intermediate (40-50W)
If you need a bit more power and are considering “sub-ohm vaping,” these box mods are rated from 40W to 50W and are compatible with resistances below 1 ohm. These products are still compact and affordable, providing a nice leap forward in performance and technology – without breaking the bank.
With it’s sleek aluminum body, the Innokin Cool Fire IV is compact, lightweight and affordable; available in numerous attractive colors. It offers plenty of power (up to 40W) and includes a 2000mAh built-in battery that will last most vapers a day or two before needing a recharge. The Cool Fire 4 has a featured filled operating system with a variety of built-in safety protections, OLED display, VRMS power regulation, SS spring-loaded 510 and can fire down to 0.2 ohms; perfect for virtually any sub-ohm tank available on the market.
The iStick 50W is one of the largest options from the iStick family. Although it has many of the same characteristics as the iStick 30W (above), the iStick 50W is a bit larger and much more powerful – offering up to 50W of output. Like it’s smaller siblings it has a permanent, built-in battery, but it has a HUGE 4400 mAh capacity cell and it also fires atomizers down to 0.2 ohms – ideal for sub-ohm style vaping. Powerful, reasonably priced and easy to use.
Primarily sold as a kit, the Kanger Subox Mini is one of the hottest products of 2015. Unlike the other box mods we’ve discussed so far, it uses a replaceable 18650 battery and will fire up to 50W. It comes in several attractive colors and includes a matching Kanger Subtank Mini that works with both 0.5 and 1.5 ohm coils. Kangertech offers additional coil options, as well as a rebuildable head for DIY’ers. Sexy and compact, it includes everything you need!
ALTERNATIVE KIT: The Joyetech EVIC VTC Mini offers 60W with temp control
Top 3 Vape Mods – Advanced (75-100W)
These mid-range box mods are moderately priced and slightly more powerful than the one’s we’ve recommended so far. Ideal for intermediate vapers with a bit of experience, they offer an increase in capability and cloud production, without being ridiculously big or powerful. All of these vape mods include temperature control ; the latest technology designed to make vaping even safer.
Powered by a replaceable 18650 battery, the IPV D3 by Pioneer4You is even small than some of the mods we’ve recommended so far, but it offers up to 80W of power with temperature control. Capable of handling atomizers from 0.15 – 3.0 ohms, the D3 includes the latest YiHi SX130H chipset; making it accurate, reliable and safe. Loaded with features, the IPV D3 Box Mod is a compact and powerful device that will take your vaping to the next level.
Like its big brother, the Smok XCube, the XCube Mini is loaded with unique features and advanced technology. Requiring a single 18650 battery (rather than two), the XCube Mini is both small and manageable. It offers up to 75W of output power with temperature control; firing as low as 0.06 ohms. In addition to its sub-ohm and temp control capability, the Xcube Mini is Bluetooth enabled and has a unique full length firing button on the side, backed by a glowing (customizable) LED. The list of features on the Mini is long!
An ergonomic design with sleek (and simple) styling make the Tesla 80W Box Mod an attractive and powerful choice to consider. We definitely love its outward appearance, but it packs some serious heat on the inside too! Compact and lightweight, it’s powered by a single 18650 battery and provides up to 80W of output. Like all of the mods in this category it includes temperature control; compatible with Ni and Ti coils at resistances as low as 0.05 ohms. It comes in a nice array of colors too, just pick your favorite.
OTHER ALTERNATIVE: Tesla Nano 100W TC Mod with built-in 4500mAh battery
Top 3 Vape Mods – Expert (100W+)
Let’s be honest, the majority of vapers will never need more than 50W of power to satisfy their needs, but for the true cloud chasers out there, these vape mods are the absolute biggest and baddest options available on the market. All of them take at least two 18650 batteries and can produce over 100W of output.
The IPV from Pioneer4You has gone through various stages over the past few years (IPV2, IPV3 and IPV4); achieving it’s full potential with the IPV4S. Powered by dual 18650 batteries, it’s extremely powerful and offers up to 120W of output. With an advanced YiHi SX330-V4SL chipset, not only is it variable wattage, but the IPV4S supports both Nickel (Ni) and Titanium (Ti) coils with Joule-based temperature control. Fire atomizers as low as 0.1 ohms and create some seriously massive clouds! One of the best box mods on the market, it’s firmware upgradable (up to 150W!) if 120W just won’t cut it.
Sigelei is known for their big and powerful box mods, and even though we recently featured the Sigelei 150W TC Mod on this list, we switched it out for Sigelei’s newest powerhouse – the Sigelei Fuchai Mod. Both are extreme cloud producing beasts, but the Sigelei Fuchai has been bumped up from 150W to 200W of power. Like all of the most advanced setups on the market, it includes temperature control and supports nickel (Ni) and titanium (Ti) coils. Just add two 18650 batteries and your favorite atomizer or sub-ohm tank.
Looking for some serious power and battery life? How about a mod with three (yes three!) 18650 cells!?! The Wismec Reuleaux RX200 Mod can produce up to 200W of output and has massive battery capacity. There’s a DNA200 version available, which costs more than three times as much, but the RX2000 uses Wismec’s propriety chip and is comparable in most aspects; 200W of power, temperature control, magnetic battery cover, OLED screen and spring-loaded 510. Not only can it pump out massive clouds of vapor, but with three 18650 batteries it’s likely to operate for days before needing a recharge.
