Electronic Cigarettes vs. Tobacco

by · August 19, 2013

Benefits of E-Cigarettes vs. TobaccoPeople are making the switch to electronic cigarettes for a variety of reasons. Some people are using e-cigs to cut their nicotine consumption, while others are looking for a healthier alternative to smoking. No matter what your reasons for considering e-cigarettes, here are the main benefits of e-cigarettes vs. tobacco and why you should make the switch today.

Benefit #1 – Healthier Than Smoking?

Legally, electronic cigarette companies cannot claim that e-cigarettes are healthier than tobacco cigarettes, but we’re not bound by the same restrictions – so we’ll say it! OK, we can’t say it either because there hasn’t been enough testing done to fully prove that electronic cigarettes are safer, but common sense should tell you they’re a much better alternative than smoking tobacco.

Rather than inhaling tobacco smoke, which is loaded with carbon monoxide and hundreds of other chemicals, an e-cig heats up liquid nicotine and turns it into vapor. It lacks the laundry-list of cancer-causing carcinogens, tar and ash, while providing the feel of real tobacco smoke. Over the last 50 years, hundreds of studies have shown that smoking traditional cigarettes can put you at risk for lung cancer, throat cancer, pneumonia, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke and countless others. The same CANNOT be said about e-cigarettes.

Needless to say, most electronic cigarette users report feeling more energized, less lethargic and healthier than ever after making the switch to electronic cigarettes.

Benefit #2 – E-Cigarettes are Cheaper

For many people, cost is a big motivator when it comes to the choice between tobacco vs. e-cigarettes. With a pack of tobacco cigarettes ranging anywhere from $6 to $12 (depending on the state), a smoker can easily spend $250+ per month. In comparison, e-cig cartridges (which are equivalent to about 1 pack of cigarettes) average around $2.50 a piece – less than 1/3 the cost. Buy cartridges in bulk or fill blank cartridges with liquid and you can save even more. It’s safe to say an average smoker can easily save $1200 per year by making the switch. Learn more →

Benefit #3 – No Smoke / No Offensive Odor

Cigarettes stink! Ask a non or ex-smoker how they feel about the smell of cigarettes and you’re sure to get a negative response. Cigarette smoke gets into, and clings to just about everything it comes into contact with – hair, skin, clothes, furniture, your vehicle, etc. If you’re a smoker you probably don’t even notice it because you’re immersed in the smell all day, but everybody else does.

One reason cigarettes produce such a powerful and ominous scent is that you’re burning tar and a variety of different chemicals in addition to the tobacco itself. Properties of these substances cause them to stick to fabrics, hair, walls and just about everything else. That’s why e-cig users often refer to them as “stinkies.”

E-cigarettes, on the other hand, don’t have this problem because they produce vapor that dissipates almost immediately. Odor does not stick to your hands or anything around you, in fact, most people report little or no odor at all.

Benefit #5 – No Open Flames

It may seem like a minor risk, but traditional cigarettes are a serious fire hazard. In fact, cigarettes are the number one cause of fire-related death in the United States and 7 other countries. Worldwide, fires started by lit cigarettes constitute 10% of all fire-related deaths. Fires caused by e-cig batteries are regularly reported by the media, but e-cigarette fires are extremely rare.

In a traditional cigarette, tobacco is constantly burning, not to mention the open flame required to light it. E-cigs use a heating element and do not require a flame. There isn’t a hot ember that can burn you, your clothing or anything else.

Benefit #6 – More Socially Acceptable?

Let’s face it, attitudes about smoking have drastically changed over the past 30 years. At one time it was totally acceptable to smoke cigarettes almost anywhere: restaurants, bars, the mall, at work and even on airplanes! But the smell and negative health consequences have combined to produce stronger restrictions and have given traditional cigarettes a bad name.

If you’re a smoker, you’ve probably noticed some of the negative social consequences. For example, how often do you see a nonsmoker dating a smoker? Does being forced to step outside every time you need a cigarette draw negative, unwanted attention? Have you ever noticed the critical looks as you walk down the street with a smoke in your hands? Have people gotten up and walked away because of your smoking or asked you to put your cigarette out?

Electronic cigarettes may not be completely free of the social stigma, but the lack of odor and the healthier perception may eventually change the way people look at vaping products. Currently, there are limited restrictions on their usage and you can legally use electronic cigarettes in most places.

The Choice Is Yours…

When you consider all of the benefits to e-cigarettes, it’s easy to see why so many people are making the switch to vaping. E-cigs offer the taste and feel of using real tobacco cigarettes, without any of the nasty or dangerous side effects. If you can adjust to some minor differences in operation and flavor, the impact could be substantial to both your health and your pocket book.

[…] This study also contradicts previous assumptions that vaping is just as bad for your heart as smoking. The evidence clearly shows that vapers can improve their heart health, validating that the British Government’s decision to make e-cigarettes available on their National Health Service. It’s a fact that more smokers die from cardiovascular diseases than they do from lung cancer. Given the clear role that carbon monoxide plays in smoking-related circulatory diseases and the absence of carbon monoxide in e-cigarettes, more needs to be done to make sure that smokers with heart problems are aware of the benefits of vaping.
