Thankful for VapingEach year at Thanksgiving we reflect on the things we’re thankful for – family, friends, health, security and so many other things that we take for granted. Although I just quit smoking about a year ago, it’s easy to forget what life was like before vaping – when my world revolved around cigarettes. Over the past year I’ve become a strong advocate of vaping; preaching to my friends and family, trying to convince people to switch, helping to develop this website and spreading the word everywhere I go. Even though I’m a strong proponent of electronic cigarettes and believe that they’re saving lives and improving the health millions of people around the world, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily routine and forget to appreciate the little things that make my life easier and more pleasant. I’m thankful for many things, but here are the main reasons I’m thankful for vaping:

Reason #1 – It Helped Me Quit Smoking!

No Smoking CigarettesI think this is the most important benefit for me – and virtually every vaper out there. I’m not claiming that I was the heaviest or most nicotine dependent smoker, but it dominated a significant portion of my life (almost 15 years) and I spent at least five of them struggling to quit. Just like almost every tobacco user, I tried to kick the habit multiple times, only to jump back on the bandwagon when things got tough or I found another excuse to light back up. It wasn’t until I discovered electronic cigarettes that I was eventually able to quit. It’s been over a year now, and although I struggled a bit at first, I’m confident in saying that I will never smoke a cigarette again. At this point, THE THOUGHT OF A CIGARETTE REPULSES ME! I was never able to say that during my short, failed attempts in the past. I always craved cigarettes! Not only have I stopped smoking, but I’ve lowered my nicotine consumption in the process.

Legally, electronic cigarette makers cannot claim that e-cigs help people quit, but just ask any vaper how effective they were at helping them break the habit. A variety of studies have proven their effectiveness at smoking cessation and the evidence strongly supports the fact that e-cigarettes help people quit smoking and expose them to significantly less health risks.

Reason #2 – I’m Healthier & More Energetic

After years of smoking, feeling sluggish and lethargic became the norm. More often than not I found myself exhausted and unmotivated. At the time, I assumed it was normal and attributed it to my age; afterall, I was in my thirties now – WHOA! Maybe I was just making excuses, but I quickly realized after making the switch that it wasn’t normal to feel so lifeless at such a young age. Once I cut the cigarettes out I felt a new sense of motivation and energy. I’m sure there was a bit of ‘placebo effect’ for the first few months, but it’s been over a year and I’m feeling healthier and more energetic than ever before!

Reason #3 – No More Hacking or Shortness of Breath

This is another nasty side effect of smoking that I ignored because I was so hooked on tobacco. The raspy cough and shortness of breath certainly didn’t help my energy levels or my health, but more importantly it was proof that I was severely degrading my lungs. I can only hope that the damage will eventually be reversed, but since I’ve been vaping, the hacking, flem and shortness of breath have virtually disappeared. Although a deep, long drag on my e-cig can cause temporary chest tightness on occasion, for the most part, I can breath easier and my lungs feel like they’re slowly starting to heal from years of smoking. I can actually ride my bike again without getting winded!

Reason #4 – My Taste Buds Are Back

Until you quit smoking, you don’t realize how much cigarettes affect your senses – especially your sense of taste and smell. I’m sure this is true for anyone that kicks the habit, but it was a huge surprise to realize how much I was missing because of my smoking. Foods taste especially delicious now, aromas are more crisp and distinctive and all of my senses feel fully in-tune again.

Reason #5 – The Nasty Stench Is Gone (Almost)

Cigarettes stink! When you’re immersed in the stench 24-hours a day, it’s just one of the things you overlook. Friends and family were constantly commenting about how bad I smelled, but I just assumed they were exaggerating because they wanted me to quit. Maybe I was just used to the aroma, or maybe my sense of smell was completely shot, but after a few months of vaping I quickly discovered exactly what my friends were talking about. Now I’m the guy complaining about smokers who come inside after a smoke break! The tar sticks to your clothing, skin and hair; and it lingers in your home and vehicle. Luckily I just purchased a new car, but I’m still fighting the tar stains and lingering affects in my home. A fresh coat of paint and new carpet are long overdue…

Reason #6 – No More Dealing With the Elements

After the indoor smoking ban in 2010, Michigan smokers were forced to step outside to partake in their favorite pastime. No more smoking in bars, resturaunts or the workplace. Like so many others, I grumbled under my breathe every time I had to visit the ‘designated smoking area.’ Wind, rain, freezing temperatures and blowing snow – no wonder I was constantly getting sick! Right now there are 40 states with indoor smoking bans in-place, and some are proposing the same bans on electronic cigarettes. Although the rules may eventually change (and I’ll grumble under my breath just like I did before), for now I can stay inside where it’s warm, toasty and dry.

Reason #7 – I’m Saving Money (Big Time)

Money definitely wasn’t my motivation for switching to electronic cigarettes, but I’ve easily saved over $1500 in the last 12 months. At about $6.00 a pack, my pack-a-day smoking habit cost me over $2000 per year. In comparison, 1ml of e-liquid (equivalent to about a pack of cigarettes) costs me well under a dollar. Throw in batteries and other vital components, and I’m easily spending 75% less on vaping. An extra $150 each month may not seem like a big deal, but it really adds up and has made a huge impact on my bottom line. Sure… let’s GO OUT for dinner tonight!

Reason #8 – I’m Helping Other People Quit!

As if the personal benefits weren’t enough, I’m especially thankful that I’m making a positive impact and helping other people make the switch. Smokers are constantly asking me questions about my personal vaporizer and I’m able to reach a significant audience on Cig Studies prove that electronic cigarettes contain virtually none of the harmful chemicals found in cigarettes and expose people to significantly less health risks . Electronic cigarettes have not only helped me with my struggles, but they’ve given me a new passion and a way to make a difference.
