Volcano Ups The Game With Lavabox DNA200 Box Mod
Hawaii-based Volcano Cigs is making its entrance into the box mod game in grand style, releasing a 200W device called the Lavabox DNA 200 Mod. Volcano was rumored to be working on the mod earlier this year, however it was just launched last month. The Lavabox DNA200 Box Mod joins only a handful of DNA200-powered devices currently on the market.
Retailing for $169.99, the Lavabox Mod features an aluminum metal alloy casing with interchangeable rubberized grips. It is temperature control-capable (Ni, Ti and SS coils), sports a large OLED screen and some of the most advanced customization options on the market. A spring-loaded 510 connector will allow for a more solid connection between the mod and atomizer, and it’s surrounded by eight inflow channels that Volcano says will improve airflow and vapor production.
So where does the device get it’s name? The term “DNA200” comes from the computer chip that runs the Volcano Lavabox. Evolv, the chip’s manufacturer, is well-known for their advanced technology and describes the DNA 200 like this:
a power regulated digital switch-mode DC-DC converter for personal vaporizers. It features Evolv’s patented Wattage Control, Temperature Protection, Preheat, Digital User Controls, OLED Screen, Onboard Buttons and Synchronous Rectification for maximum battery life and minimal heat generation.
Right now, there are about a dozen different box mods that use the DNA200 chipset, all of which run at a maximum of 200 watts.
The Volcano Lavabox DNA 200 Mod, and all DNA200 devices, run on EVOLV’s eScribe software. eScribe allows the user to connect the device to a computer via USB to customize settings. Up to eight separate user profiles can be stored, and Volcano says there are 93 different customization options available to the user. The device is also charged through its micro USB port as well.
Lavabox DNA 200 Mod Opinions
At 200W, the power output seems a little crazy given the majority of vapers stay well under 100 watts. However, with increased competition across the industry, manufacturers are looking for new ways to differentiate themselves and one-up each other, and it now appears that offering crazy amounts of power is the thing. But will this cause problems with battery life? It depends.
While most box mod manufacturers have opted to use removable 18650 batteries to power their devices, Volcano chose to power its device using an three-cell internal battery. At 2700mAh total, that’s quite a bit of capacity and the company claims users will get a full day’s use out of the device without the need to recharge. Given that most users will rarely use the highest settings, I’m betting this is an understatement, and reviews of the device so far are generally positive.
Vape celebrity Grimm Green says on YouTube that he was “swept off his feet:”
It’s incredibly, incredibly comfortable to hold … I think Volcano did a bang up job with this.
The Grumpy Vapor had similar feelings on the LavaBox DNA200 Box Mod, even going as far to suggest that it might be the only box you’ll ever need:
This one truly is the zenith in box mod technology. Boxes always have a downside, whether it be lack of power, cumbersome size, non rechargeable batteries, or poor battery life, the LAVABOX checks all these and more, bringing you all you will ever need in one neat package. Built to perfection without scrimping on materials or build quality.
Is 200W really necessary? Not for me personally, but the Volcano Lavabox DNA 200 Mod is an awesome looking device that’s sure to gain the attention of cloud chasers everywhere. There’s been a lot of positive feedback about the device so far, and the DNA200 chipset is quickly becoming an industry favorite.
